Gary Eggers, coordinator for the Maquoketa Community Cupboard is seeking volunteers to assist with moving equipment and inventory from the Cupboard’s current address at the Methodist church on Wesley Drive, to its new location on West Platt Street. The Platt Street property, previously owned by Aldi, Inc. was purchased last year by DAC, Inc., a local agency that provides employment and residence services to individuals with disabilities. DAC proposed sharing the building with the Cupboard last spring and the Maquoketa Ministerial Association began making preparations almost immediately. The Community Cupboard has been housed at First United Methodist Church since it was established in 1979. At that time, the church’s Council on Ministries and the Rev. Del Dawes, decided to address the urgent needs in the community. The area had been devastated by the economic recession and subsequent unemployment. Some families simply had no way to access food. As time went on, other Maquoketa churches and county social service agencies got involved. The Cupboard continues to serve families and individuals in Jackson County. It is open to the public every Friday from 9 am until 11 am and available by appointment, 7 days a week. The new location offers many advantages, including more refrigerator space and improved handicap accessibility.
